About Us
The School as presently constituted was formally established in June 2014 due to the rapid expansion of enrollment and development of new programmes in the then Social Sciences and Humanities Department. The School is in the College of Human Resource Development and currently has two departments and one centre; the Media Technology and Applied Communication Department (MTAC), the Department of Development Studies (DDS) and the Centre for Foreign Languages and Linguistics.
All the Departments and Centre in the School are deliberately and professionally fashioned to deliver nothing but the best in their specific areas of focus. The Media Technology and Applied Communication Department deals primarily with media related courses, and offers Diplomas, Bachelors, Masters and PhD programmes in Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Corporate Communication among others. The same course levels apply for the Department of Development Studies, which offers among others, Development Studies, Community Development, International Relations…
The Centre for Foreign Languages and Linguistics, established in May 2014, aims at equipping learners with foreign and linguistic skills, and currently offers courses in French, Japanese, German, Korean, Chinese as well as bridging courses in English and Kiswahili.

News & Headlines
 The JKUAT Multimedia and Development Fest (JKUAT MDF) is an initiative of the School of Communication and Development Studies (SCDS) in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to bring together the academia, professionals, and practitioners in the communication industry.
It is an event where students from various universities, colleges and secondary schools network, share and exhibit their multimedia productions in various categories to industry players, professionals and the general public.
The categories for which they compete include: Audio-Visual Production, Print Media, Photography and Photojournalism, Public Relations and Advertising, and Development. The best three projects in each of the categories are awarded.
The MDF AimThe main aim of the JKUAT MDF is to bridge the gap between the corporate world and students in the Media, Communication and Development fields so as to enhance understanding, appreciation and knowledge of the profession. The event enhances the utilization of student projects and innovations by the industry.
A Historical BackgroundThe inaugural festival was held on March 27th 2013 as the JKUAT Multimedia Festival (JKUAT MMF). At the time, the school was a department but since the upgrade was need to change the name. Celebrate youth’s creativity, innovation and strategic thinking for a sustainable future and development
The subsequent event was held on May 25 and 26th 2017 as JKUAT MDF. The event involved much rebranding, review of goals and positioning to ensure relevance of the event.
JKUAT MDF 2017
The event begun with the MMF Relaunch on 08/06/2016. A committee was set up which embarked on strategic planning and event rebranding from MMF to MDFOn 23/03/2017 JKUAT MDF held the Japan Media Arts Festival Screening of Award Winning Works as a pre-eventJKUAT MDF 2017 was held on May 25th and 26th 2017. The event involved student competition, exhibitions, student workshops, language contest and a high school essay writing competition.JKUAT MDF was able to raise enough money for organizing the eventStudio equipment purchase thereby improving student learning experienceIncreased student participation with over 40 project submissions and an event attendanceof above 2000Attendance by 6 High Schools

The Office of the Dean of students in partnership with Office of the President (JKUSA) organized an annual cultural week event on November 23,2023 at the JKUAT Pavilion grounds to provide a vibrant platform for students to enhance national cohesion and diversity amongst the student through showcasing and celebrating their cultures.
Themed; “Cultural Diversity: Fabric of Africa Society,” the event provided an opportunity for an inclusive representation of the diverse cultures and talents, arts, food and fashion within the JKUAT fraternity and neighboring communities.
